About NOC (Network Operations Center)
The Harvard core network is a joint effort of the faculties, departments,
and affiliated institutions of Harvard University. Many groups and individuals
contribute to the network's performance, growth, and success.
- University-wide planning and advisory committees, such as the University
Technology Architecture Group (UTAG), help determine the direction and scope
of the core network, with the goal of supporting the University's mission.
(For information on UTAG, contact Scott
Bradner.
- The Network Engineering and Planning group of NOC provides architecture,
consulting, and design services to evolve the core network to meet the University's
fast-growing network needs.
- The Network Operations Center (NOC) within University
Information Systems (UIS) manages the infrastructure and daily operations
of the core network.
In recent years, strategic network enhancements have focused on increasing
redundancy to ensure robustness and continuous operation and delivering high
bandwidth to support innovative applications for teaching, research, and communication.
Many of the technology initiatives currently under way at Harvard relate to
or rely on the Harvard core network.

Our role
The Network Engineering and Planning group within NOC plays an active role
in evolving the Harvard core network and supporting the networking initiatives
of schools and departments.
- In a technical advisory capacity, staff members participate in key planning
committees that define the scope and direction of the Harvard network. We
also assist in projects designed to evaluate or pilot new technologies.
- We provide architecture, design, consulting, and project management services
for University-wide network infrastructure projects such as voice over IP,
a video/audio conferencing gateway, and video streaming.
- We act as a technical advisor, advocate, and ambassador to the schools
and departments, encouraging adoption of University-wide technical standards,
fostering collaboration, and facilitating knowledge transfer within the Harvard
IT community and between Harvard and the external technology community. [link

Fee-for-service offerings
Network Engineering and Planning staff members are available to consult with
Harvard IT departments on a fee-for-service basis. Areas of expertise include:
- Network engineering and design consulting
- Network management consulting
- Network services and systems design consulting
- Network security.
External activities
To ensure that Harvard stays in step with the latest technology developments
and industry standards, staff members play an active role in the networking
community beyond Harvard. They participate in standards-setting bodies and workgroups,
contribute to collaborative initiatives, attend and present at major meetings
and conferences, and provide knowledge transfer to Harvard's own networking
community.
